Lets start with the basics. First you must tune your guitar to standard and if you do not have a guitar tuner I suggest you buy one. They are very helpful and all guitarists need one. The first chord you need to learn is "G". To play this chord you place your middle finger on the third fret of the top low "E" string, your index finger on the second fret of the next string down which is the "A" string, your ring finger on the third fret of the 2nd string from the bottom which is the "B" string, and your pinkie finger on the third fret of the bottom high "E" string and this is a "G" chord as shown below. The next chord we are going to learn is a "D" chord. To play a "D" you place your index finger on the second fret of the third string from the bottom which is the "G" string, your ring finger on the third fret of the second string from the bottom, and your middle finger on the second fret of the bottom string and this is a "D" chord as shown below.
(D)(STRUM ALL BUT THE TOP)
The last chord we will learn in this section is a "C" chord. This is played by placing your ring finger on the third fret of the fifth string from the bottom, your middle finger on the second fret of the fourth string from the bottom and your index finger on the first fret second string from the bottom and this is a "C" chord as shown below.
(C)(STRUM ALL BUT THE TOP)
Practice switching back and fourth between G, D, C, and back to G again. These are the chords for the verse of one of the most famous praise and worship songs "Open the Eyes of my Heart." Just listen to the song for the chord changes and strumming patterns. My next blog will have the chords in order for the chorus of "Open the Eyes of my Heart."
